1) Colleen Werthmann is currently appearing in a play by The Civilians, an investigative theater company, at the Irondale Center in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. IN THE FOOTPRINT, a new play with music, tells the story of the largest development project in Brooklyn’s history. The play examines the conflicts that erupted in from Atlantic Yards’ unveiling through to its current resolution in an attempt to discover how the fate of the city is decided in present-day New York and what can be learned from this ongoing saga of politics, money, and the places we call home. The play is constructed from interviews with real life players in this Brooklyn epic, including local residents, business owners, Daniel Goldstein, political leaders such as Letitia James and Marty Markowitz, activists, union members, and community leaders.
1) After the January 10th earthquake in Haiti, Annie Nocenti spent four months there making documentaries. This week, HiLobrow.com published the first in a series (titled “Gadou Gadou”) of ten reports by Nocenti. Excerpt:

My Haitian film students are devoted to telling the stories of their country in their own circuitous, gentle style. They film as they live: wander into a life, look around, notice things, leave. No prying, no trickery, no push to find an ending. Today we’re filming Sonise, a 17-year-old pregnant girl with an easy smile that somehow only increases her impenetrability. She’s about to have her first baby in mud, filth and stench. I ask Keziah, one of my students, what she thinks of Sonise. Keziah’s a statuesque Haitian with a body steady as a tripod, making her a perfect hand-held shooter. Keziah says: “Sonise? She should be very afraid. But she’s not.”

2) Nomi Kane just finished co-editing and contributing to a new project called Peep Show. “It’s a pin-up calendar by a gaggle of Center for Cartoon Studies she-toonists. Twelve of us have created beautiful and, slightly scandalous, illustrations to enjoy every month of 2011!” You can see a preview and order a copy at Kane’s website Brew for Breakfast.

3) Jeff Turrentine tells us that he’s finished the final draft (he hopes) of his first novel. It’s called Cities of Sand, and he’s sending it out to agents now.

1) Sheila Heti‘s new book, How Should a Person Be?, was released on October 5 in Canada by House of Anansi Press. (It can be ordered online by Americans.) David Shields writes, “Sheila Heti’s voice in How Should a Person Be? is utterly beguiling: blunt, charming, funny, and smart. She subtly and beautifully weaves together ideas about sex, femininity and artistic ambition. Reading this genre-defying book was pure pleasure.” The prologue to the book can be read on her website.

Heti invites S.O. readers in Toronto that day to attend the launch party on October 14th at 8 pm at Stone’s Place, 1255 Queen Street West.

2) Robert Lopez‘s new collection of stories, Asunder, is due out from Dzanc Books in November. He has stories in The Brooklyn Rail, Unsaid, and Sententia this month. On October 22nd, he’ll be reading at Issue Project Room for The Brooklyn Rail’s 10th anniversary. Old American Can Factory: 232 3rd St.

3) The blog Design Observer (with whom Significant Objects partnered for a week during SOv1) has published a slideshow spotlighting S.O. coeditor Joshua Glenn’s collection of Cold War-era “X” paperbacks. Excerpt from introduction:

I started collecting Cold War-era (i.e., from the end of WWII through détente) “X” paperbacks when I was 12 years old. From the pulp fiction pile in my grandfather’s summer house in Maine, I smuggled home a 1945 Pocket Book edition of Philip MacDonald’s Warrant for X. I didn’t want to read it; I was obsessed with the free-standing “X” on its cover: two swipes of red paint topped by two narrower swipes of white. Thus rendered, the letterform struck me — though not in these terms — as the quintessential signifier of all things mysterious and dangerous, forbidden and sexy.

Excerpt from the review:

Over and over, there is coupling, anti-erotic even in its eroticism, with Serge re-enacting his first sexual encounter — seeing, yes, as shadow play through a screen, his brilliant sister being taken from behind by his father’s friend, a decoder, whom she has essentially seduced. Or perhaps this is his second sexual encounter; the first involved Sophie tapping out a message in Morse code on his tiny penis (thrusting us and, surely, the aptly named Serge, back and forth between the electric and the erotic).

1) Miranda Mellis recently reviewed Thalia Field’s Bird Lovers, Backyard in Brooklyn Rail. Excerpt:

More than half a century ago, Hannah Arendt was already arguing that scientists “move in a world where speech has lost its power.” Field’s book is, among other things, science translated into the discourses of poetry and theater. There is an ethical, interdisciplinary vision underlying the recursive image of a gang of students milling around Bird Lovers, Backyard, replete with notebooks and saddlebags, doing amateur science. They ask questions, connect dots—they’re a chorus.

Mellis has another review coming out in October of Danielle Dutton’s Sprawl, also in the Rail.

2) Jason Grote‘s play 1001 continues its run at Chicago’s Chopin Theater through October 11 [cast pictured above]; view the Time Out feature here. His exegesis of Silver Age comic double-entendres will be coming soon to Hilobrow.com, his short play In His Bold Gaze My Ruin Is Writ Large will be produced at New York’s Crown Point Festival, and his longer play Maria/Stuart will by read by Circle X and Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles in their Monday night series.
